FTAA - Miami Ministerial in November.
START NOW TO STOP THE FREE TRADE AREA OF THE AMERICAS
Come down to Florida on Wednesday, November 19th. Fight for Fair Trade. Stay the weekend.
Four years ago in February of 1999 in Seattle, a motley network of 80 activists first came together to plan for the civil society mobilization against the WTO. In January, a similarly historic meeting convened in Miami to begin planning a civil society welcome for the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) ministerial scheduled for November 17th - 21st in downtown Miami. Labor was there (AFL-CIO local CLC and representatives of over 10 local unions), the Sierra Club was represented, so was the Florida Fair Trade Coalition, Jobs with Justice (JwJ), the Miami Workers Center, Coalition of Immokalee Workers, as was Unite for Dignity, Public Citizen, the Citizens Trade Campaign (CTC), the Alliance for Responsible Trade (ART) and many others. Be a part of this mobilization against corporate-controlled globalization - and help Stop the FTAA!
There is already talk of: Teach-ins and seminars, reality tours, concerts and forums, rallies and marches and many more ways to get our message out!
Folks from Florida and around the country will be joined by activists from around the world linking the local issues to the global fights and building solidarity and alternatives.

Europe's next appointment: Shut Down DSEi Arms fair!
One of the world's biggest ever trade fairs for guns, bombs, military planes, small arms, mines and tanks is taking place in London from 9th - 12th September 2003.
An international protest. Thousands of protesters, from all over the world, are invited to travel to the UK to help stop this market of death, and to work towards shutting down the whole murderous industry. This is a chance to target not just the fair itself, but the businesses behind it.
What is DSEi?
Defence Systems Equipment International (DSEi 2003) is an arms fair, sponsored by the British government. It will host arms buyers from all over the world - including countries on Amnesty International's list of human rights abusers, and others who should be!
Also shopping at this huge arms fair will be delegates representing some of the poorest countries in Africa and Asia. Rich Western governments, including America, Britain, France and Italy, and their weapons companies, will try to get them to buy expensive weapons instead of spending money on education, development and medicine.
The last DSEi exhibition took place over 11th September 2001, the day of the attacks on New York and Washington in America. While many businesses around the world closed, the arms fair stayed open. For three more days, countries including America, Israel and 14 different Arab nations continued to shop, side-by-side, for weapons to attack each other with!
The arms trade, of which DSEi 2003 is an important part, is an international political business made up of multinational companies which make products that kill and maim for profit. These companies play a leading role in the unjust global economic system which causes poverty and abuse of human rights around the world.
Civilians made up 90 percent of all war casualties during the 1990s. Wars continue today only thanks to the arms trade. Due to globalisation, the arms companies operate above the law, outside of trade agreements, and firmly in favour only of the rich and powerful.
The arms business in the UK harms local communities. The London borough of Newham, where DSEi is taking place, is one of the poorest in the country. The people of Newham do not want this fair for weapons of death to come into their community. They want better education, housing, health, job creation and living wages as a minimal starting point.
The British government spends millions subsidising the arms trade, while people are too poor to eat healthily, their schools are bursting, their hospitals are run down.
What is being planned?

WTO: Showdown in Cancun
From September 10th to 14th 2003 the World Trade Organization plans to hold its fifth Ministerial Meeting in Cancun, Mexico. The WTO Ministerial in Seattle 1999 turned out to be a disaster for them, and for the first time the mainstream media could no longer remain silent about the global protests against capitalism. The WTO then went to hide in Doha in Qatar, and Cancun might now be a second Seattle. Around the world organisations and grassroots movements are mobilising to derail the WTO!
Especially in Latin America, incredible resistance is increasing against the planned Free Trade Area of the Americas (ALCA), against Plan Colombia, Plan Puebla-Panama and Structural Adjustment Programmes of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, against militarization and war. Among many actions in several countries, there was a large meeting against ALCA last October in Quito (Ecuador), protests against the privatisation of health and social security in El Salvador, massive protests in Argentina, peasants and indigenous people striking in Colombia, mobilisations against privatisation in Peru, peasants blockading in Bolivia, actions against FTAA in North America, etc.
Many different sectors will continue their struggles against capitalism in different ways: peasants, indigenous and black communities, trade unionists, students, womens' movements and environmental organisations are taking to the streets and paths this September in response to the call for action issued by the Latin American PGA convenors in Quito and other calls issued in the Americas.
The Peoples' Global Action network has issued a call for decentralised actions everywhere during the WTO Ministerial in Cancun from September 10th until 14th. At the same time we want to celebrate as a global movement. We want to continue our search, asking questions like the Zapatistas, towards a different world here and now. We want to question the patriarchal capitalist logic of war. Not only during summit protests like in Hyderabad, Geneva, Seattle, Prague, Bangkok, Quebec, Genoa, Quito, Buenos Aires and everywhere - but also in our everyday life we want to creatively turn our anger into resistance.

Death to the fucking oligarchists! Is there no end to this? Why don't people see the oppression? I know it's obvious! Why don't they fight?
Fun fact. If you listen to NPR you might have heard the story, if you follow the news you probably have figured it out on your own. Still, it's worth repeating. Clinton, the president who brought to the white house sax and sex, offered an amnisty package to all immigrants. He basically said, if you are here "illegally," and let us know you're here, we'll give you a green card (it takes a couple years, but at least we're not persicuting immigrants). Then, Adolph Bush becomes president (without being voted in... interesting) and says, if you are from one of these Muslim nations (or North Korea), and you don't report to your local INS office, you will be hunted down, deported, and all progress made towards getting a visa will be for nothing. So all of these Muslims (many who have spent most of their lives in the U.S., having come here as young children) report to the INS... WHERE THEY ARE ARRESTED, FINED, AND HAVE DEPORTATION PROCEEDINGS BEGUN ON THEM!!!
Freedom? Opportunity? Ask them how wonderful the government of the United States is! Welcome to America, you can stay... oh wait, you're Muslim, you have different colored skin, now get out!

The death toll is rising, the military is finally giving a little control back to the Iraqis because the soldiers don't want to be shot anymore (isn't that what they volunteered for?), and Bush got to go on a vacation tour of Africa to put on the show that he cares about their problems and not just their oil and diamonds. And still, the American people support the bastard with a 60% approval rating. I'm feeling sick.

Did you know that for every single day that passes, our government collects billions of dollars in taxes, spends billions of dollars (plus a few more) on programs that you will probably never benefit from, and passes laws, proposes bills, and makes monumental decisions without your input?
No one is to blame but yourself. Each and every one of us MUST be willing to use our voice, to fight for what we believe in, to DEMAND our individual freedom which we so rightly deserve! This isn't meant to be philisophical, however we only have one life to live. If you believe that the president shouldn't be where he is, why is he making decisions that affect your life? Are you going to sit around for the rest of your life, accepting your fate as a slave to the state? Will you be whining in 20 years about how you wish for freedom, but never did anything about it? Or will you FIGHT? STAND UP!
The time is now. Carpe Diem. Make your move. You interact with people everyday, and everyday you pass up opportunities to change the world! Why wait? Start fighting for a change NOW!
